Filmmaking summer camp for Kids

Tell your story. Make a movie. Create memories together.

Learning Filmmaking at SummerTech

Filmmaking at SummerTech is about bringing stories to life while having fun and creating something memorable with friends. Campers explore the entire filmmaking process, from developing an original idea and writing a script to storyboarding, filming, editing, and presenting their finished movie. Along the way, they discover how storytelling, creativity, and teamwork come together to turn an idea into something everyone can enjoy.

Our approach emphasizes learning by doing. Campers work together as writers, directors, actors, camera operators, and editors, discovering the different roles that make a film possible. With guidance from our instructors, they learn to plan their productions, manage their time, solve unexpected challenges, and make creative decisions together. The experience is as much about collaboration and communication as it is about filmmaking.

Whether campers dream of directing movies, love acting, enjoy telling stories, or simply want to make something fun with their friends, there’s a place for them in our filmmaking class. Beginners learn the essentials of visual storytelling and production, while more experienced filmmakers can explore increasingly ambitious projects and techniques. From the first brainstorming session to the final screening, campers experience the excitement and satisfaction of making a movie together.

Uses

What Can You Create in Filmmaking?

From hilarious comedies and imaginative adventures to documentaries and original short films, filmmaking gives campers the freedom to tell stories their way. Working with friends, they develop ideas, write scripts, plan scenes, film their productions, and edit their footage into finished movies they can share with an audience.

From Script to Screen

Every movie starts with an idea, but bringing that idea to life takes planning, creativity, and teamwork. At SummerTech, campers experience the entire filmmaking process, beginning with brainstorming and scriptwriting before moving into storyboarding, casting, scheduling, and filming. Along the way, they learn to organize their time, communicate their ideas, and work together to turn an ambitious vision into an achievable production.

Once filming wraps, campers discover how editing, sound, and pacing transform raw footage into a finished story. Our instructors guide them through creative decisions and unexpected challenges while encouraging collaboration, experimentation, and plenty of laughter. The experience culminates in the excitement of sharing a completed movie and celebrating everything they accomplished together.

Everyone Has a Role in Filmmaking

You don’t have to dream of becoming a director or actor to enjoy filmmaking at SummerTech. Some campers love writing stories, others enjoy being behind the camera, and some discover that editing or organizing a production is where they shine. Our instructors help each camper explore different roles, develop new skills, and discover how their individual talents contribute to a shared creative project.

Whether it’s their first time making a movie or they’ve already experimented with filmmaking, campers are encouraged to try new things, take creative risks, and learn from one another. Along the way, they build friendships, practice leadership and teamwork, and experience the satisfaction of creating something together. And often, the memories made behind the scenes are just as meaningful as the finished film.

Python or Java? Which One Should My Child Learn First?

We get this question all the time, and here’s our advice:

It’s simple, readable, and helps students quickly understand the fundamentals of coding. For beginners under 14, we strongly recommend Python as their first language. It lets them focus on concepts instead of getting stuck on complicated syntax.

The AP Comp Sci A course is taught in Java, so it can make sense for older students to start there. That said, students who begin with Python usually have an easier time when they move on to Java—they already understand the core concepts and can focus on learning Java’s structure.

Either way, both languages build on the same ideas, and learning one will make the other easier. The most important thing is to begin and to enjoy the process.
